Toraji Yakiniku

Hey guys! Sorry for the short hiatus again! I was sick for a bit and it took me a while to get back into the swing of things. If you ever drive down Kapahulu, you will definitely notice Toraji's restaurant sign. The sign is actually what made me want to try them out! I had seen it many times in between my trips to Safeway and Genki and decided to try it out one day. The food and service were great, the parking...what parking? But we'll get to that later...haha

The sign I'm talking about!

Jimbo Restaurant

A noodle lover like myself must do a post on Jimbo's! I've heard and read nothing but great things about Jimbo Restaurant so I decided to give it a try! I'm not quite sure I can agree with those reviews right now...but I think it's definitely worth another visit to change my opinions! Maybe it was an off day? Well let's see what I had!

Jimbo's familiar sign as you drive down King Street...

A Night in Starbucks

I love having reading nights at cafes. Here is a night in Starbucks from a few months back. I tried out a new drink, I think it was a green tea latte. I also found a new thing to do in the cafes! Bananagrams is very very fun. I'm pretty bad at it still (along with Scrabble) but I just need the practice! So here are just a few casual pics...

Yikes! Sorry for the unappetizing cookbook picture...

Grace's Inn

Our office decided to try lunch from Grace's Inn one day so I decided to put them to the test! Let's see how they would fare in making my favorite, roast pork. They also had chili cheese fries on the menu, and well, that's when it was over. Check it out!

Memorable and familiar Grace's Inn signage...

California Beach Rock N' Sushi

I went to California Beach Rock N' Sushi quite a ways back. I had heard some good things from a friend so I decided to give it a try. The night we came, it wasn't too busy so we got a table pretty quickly. There were a few other patrons in the restaurant...and they were very loud. The service was quite slow...but luckily we came in early enough for their early bird special! Let's check it out...

Arancino

I've got so many posts to put up! I need to start sharing these pictures and experiences before I forget them all! Arancino is a wonderful Italian restaurant tucked away on Beachwalk in Waikiki. I love the look and feel of this little Italian restaurant, the food is good and the service is awesome. Let's check out some pictures shall we?

New Diner's Drive In

Restaurant sign
Saturday was a nice day. Great weather and I got the rest I needed. I decided to run an errand to Palama Supermarket for ingredients in preparation for my meals this week. I'm going to make some great japh chae and also some awesome kimchee gyoza! I hope to share pictures later in the week. smile Anyway, as I finished my errands, I realized I would need some lunch. While Palama offers some great Korean food, I was going to have dinner at Koreana and lunch today at So Gong Dong...I don't want to out Korean myself.

Yumm...double rice and mac salad...winnas
At first, I ended up at Bob's BBQ...but the line was super long and I didn't see anything I craved. Then I tried my luck at Meg's Drive In but there was no parking! I continued to drive down and hit King Street and lo and behold, the New Diner's Drive In sign! I didn't realize that this place shared a lot with a saimin place and Kiawe Burgers (which I would like to try sometime soon!)...what a find!

You can't get any better than slices and slices of pork swimming in gravy...
And what's even better? They had my favorite lunch plate of all time, roast pork! So I ordered it up and here are some pictures from it. It was pretty good, not the best I ever had but definitely return-worthy. I might try their fried saimin next time. I did get to try the new Koreana restaurant and hope to do a review on this blog soon. I hope you are all having a wonderful Sunday!

Moist Caramel Apple Cake

Look at that well of caramel...
It's the weekend! I'm very excited about that! If my plans come through, I will be trying a new Korean restaurant tonight...and a very nice brunch tomorrow either at Orchids or Hoku's. I hope my plans come through...I might have some family business to take care that could interfere. But let's all hope for the best! So check out what I'm sharing with you today, this is a recipe from Kraft Foods located here.

Ohhh...caramel drippings...
I think people are surprised to find out that I'm not actually a big fan of desserts...but I tend to make a lot of these dishes for my office! I like experimenting with different things and I usually make things for others to enjoy. That's what brings me my greatest joy...is to make people happy through food! smile

Don't you just want to paddle through or something? Haha...
The cake came out very well, very moist indeed! It calls for a lot of apple dices and a wonderful caramel sauce. Look at how the cake is practically drowning in the sauce...heehee...smile

Here's how a slice looks like, look at the apple chunks!!
Anyhow, the officemates enjoyed the cake...and it was consumed within the day. I definitely recommend you trying to make this recipe if you enjoy moist apple cake! Have a great weekend everyone!

Spinach, Crab and Artichoke Cups

Close-up of the cups!
Wow! Happy belated new year to everyone! I can't believe the year is already passing me by! A post by me is not complete without repetition...but I've got to say it again! I have not given up on this blog but definitely lost a bit of inspiration. It also takes a lot of work to edit pictures and make these posts! So much so that I get too tired to even post much commentary. I'm going to play around with HTML a bit for a few days...and hopefully get back into the swing of daily posting. I might also move this to wordpress...who knows?!

Trays ready for consumption
Anyhow, I wanted to share some pictures of a new recipe I tried out last year! It's basically crab, spinach and artichoke dip in wun tun cups. I baked wun tun pi into muffin tins and they became little cups for the dip. Perfect appetizer! It was very popular at the party I served it at but I found the wun tun pi to be a bit too hard and crispy. The second time I made them, I used phyllo dough instead and I thought it was perfect! These suckers are dangerous because you pop them in your mouth without thinking!

Yummy pollen!
I think I might try wun tun pi again, but a different brand. I could tell the ones I got were very thick from the start so yes! Here are some pictures from this venture. The ending sunflower picture was the leftover dip we had for the tortilla chips. smile

Hello everyone! Happy October to you all! October is going to be a crazy busy month for me so I'm pretty excited! I'm actually visiting Philadelphia and New York for the first time ever later this month and I have a mixture of fear and excitement all at once! smile Anyhoo, here is a post that includes a few visits to Kahai Street Kitchen. Both from a catering experience and take-out experience. Enjoy!

Shirokiya Tako-Yaki

Shirokiya set up a special tako-yaki stand on the second floor to sell some wonderful fresh tako-yaki. For those who don't know, tako-yaki includes a big piece of tako (octopus) covered in a tempura crust, tonkatsu sauce, mayonnaise, red ginger, powdered seaweed, shaved bonito and spring onions. With all those flavors in one bite, who could beat that? Here are some quick pictures of it.

Tenkaippin Ramen

Tenkaippin Ramen commercials have flooded Hawaii TVs for a few months now, with very famous sumo wrestling stars singing its praises. I decided to give this ramen joint a try and came away with an interesting experience. Come along for the journey, will you?

Okata Bento

I have a lot of catching up to do! I have many posts ready for the blog that are months old, I'm going to forget a lot of details! Oh if only blogging were easier, that's why I want to switch over to Wordpress! Anyhoo, Whenever I am in Waialae, I always pass by Okata Bento wondering what they serve. They always seem to be closed during the times I pass by so I decided our office should give this place a try! We got quite a bit of food, so get ready for a lot of pictures!

I go to work everyday in Manoa and have been greatly anticipating the opening of this new Japanese market located in Puck's Alley. Finally, this past Wednesday, they opened their doors! Nijiya Market is a California based Japanese market that decided to open a location in Hawaii...and boy am I glad they did! Enjoy some pictures...smile
