07/01/2007: "Food Porn from China"

I got to visit China for the first time as an adult in the summer of 2005. I can't say that I loved it, but I have to say it was better than expected. The weather was horrible though, seriously over 100 degrees everyday with no trade winds! But with a trip to China, expect to have some journeys with food as well.

Fresh coconut juice anyone?

A shot of a typical meeting food layout. We got invited to a lot of companies and they always had fresh hot tea and fruit for us to partake in...

Some dragon eye fruit...I don't like these but I do love lychee...

Another company, more fruit and tea!

Enoki Mushroom plant

A lot of enoki mushrooms...

The view from our last day and meal at the hotel's revolving restaurant...the haziness almost provides a dream-like postcard feel huh? I really wish I could have experienced more there...

I think this was pidgeon? Am I correct? It's a delicacy of Guangzhou (which is where I vistied!)

Okay a whole pig at the table, very typical! Honestly, every meal we had for two weeks were banquet style and frankly, we were sick of it!

China is a fan of Carlsberg beer.

This is a Chinese seafood restaurant that was not planned for the trip. It was interesting, they gave us our dishes from the floor. And well, the selection of food...was definitely an acquired taste....

Can anyone guess what this dish is? It is shrimp, and their name is...peeing shrimp. I love seafood, but this was absolutely disgusting...it tastes like it sounds.

Mmm...stir-fried worms. These were good! I remember where we got it from. We went to a food court, but it was like a fear factor style food court. You would go up to the different shops and order your food...they would stamp your card and bring it straight to your table. Selections included rabbit, worms, frogs, snakes...that you could pick fresh!

One of our nicer restaurant visits, an outside restaurant with a great view.

Can you guess what this is??

Insane right? This is called jin dui, it was insanely huge! It was quite the spectacle...I don't remember any fillings. It was pretty good though, after yet another banquet style meal...=)

China was definitely a good experience and I recommend more than anything else to go with a tour group to fully experience great places. If I had a chance to compare China to Hong Kong, I definitely prefer Hong Kong much more. It's a pity I only got to spend a day at Hong Kong...a post for Hong Kong coming soon!
