08/13/2007: "Goma Tei Ramen Restaurant"
My love for noodles is always unwaivering, which is why I must praise this restaurant to the world! Goma Tei Ramen Restaurant is my absolute favorite ramen shop in Hawaii. So much so that this has become a monthly restaurant I must always check out with my friend, Kristian. It's always pretty much the same, he gets the shoyu ramen while I go for the tan tan ramen. Let's start up the review shall we?
Great menu right? I like seeing a picture of every dish, you feast with your eyes before your mouth.Full post and review...
Let's start with my least favorite. I do get an itch every once in a while to try a new thing. This is something I regretted. This is their Katsu Curry Noodle ($10.50 USD).
Another view. The reason I didn't like this was because I just don't think the thickness of the katsu sauce goes well with a ramen dish. The noodles also were different from the regular ramen noodles! I suppose it needs to be thicker to withhold the heavy sauce. Not recommended.
Anyhow, here is a picture of the interior. It is very modern and sleek, I enjoy it very much. The space is pretty small. There are four tables against the wall (that seat 4 each) and a big counter area.
Shot of both ramen bowls.
Char Siu Tan Tan Ramen ($8.75).
Close-up shot of the wonderful broth. 4 pieces of great char siu, choy sum, green onions, a great spicy sesame broth and plentiful noodles. How can you go wrong? The broth looks very thick but is actually very light and has the perfect amount of zing. The char siu can be a bit rough/dry, but has a good flavor to it.
Here is the Seafood Shoyu Ramen ($10.50 USD).
Look at all the seafood! It comes with squid, shrimp, scallops, choy sum and green onions.
Here is a close-up of the broth. Doesn't it look so clear and pristine? Kristian always gets this dish and believes himself that this is also his most favorite ramen he has ever had. He describes the broth as subtle and not sour. I had a taste of his broth, and I myself am not a big fan of it. But as I took a taste, I had a small bit of chung choi in my taste. Very interesting ingredient to add to a Japanese dish, chung choi is a salted chinese vegetable.
I forgot to take a picture of the entire gyoza dish ($5.75 USD)! Sorry! But it comes with five generous pieces. Here is a picture of the gyoza and it's fillings. I enjoy their gyoza very much, very flavorful and delicious. Highly recommended. For the quality of food, service and ambience, I think the price is more than worth the price. They are very quick with the food as well! We both got our bowls of ramen within 7 minutes of ordering them. The gyoza took a bit longer but nothing unreasonable. They play adult contemporary music in the background. The restaurant wasn't too busy when we first went in (about 6:00) but as we were finishing our meal, the restaurant started to get busy. When the restaurant gets busy, it gets loud...seeing that this is a very small space...when it gets loud, you cannot hold a conversation with your dining companion...that is my one and only complaint.
