09/04/2007: "Romy's Kahuku Prawns & Shrimp, Inc."

Ever since my discovery of Kahuku, I must say...I drive out there too many times to count. My main reasons? Well mainly, to get the best prawns in the world to eat. Then of course to top it off with some ice cream or shave ice from Angel's. You can't beat that combination, it makes for the perfect weekend treat. Let's get right to my favorite food in the world shall we?

Here's their sign to attract customers. Now, I don't know if that was by accident but it used to say Cooked or Live...it could be on purpose though.

Click here for more pictures and full review...

Here's their little "shack" and their tented seating area. I've gotta say, they have gotten a LOT busier since I've started coming here. I'm not happy with that, but hopefully that will give them enough funds to expand the shop? It mainly gets busy because of the van-loads of Japanese tourists! They have their shrimp farm right behind the eating area so you now it's definitely fresh.

Butter and Garlic Shrimp aka Number 1.

All that garlic, how could anyone lose? If you ever decide to get the prawns for anything other than Number 5, do not expect the same prawns in the following pictures. The prawns you get for number one are considerably smaller, I only get it if I absolutely have to.

Each plate comes with two sauces. Here is the spicy shoyu sauce.

Number 5. My FAVORITE. Here is the prawns with the number 5 (the 1 pound plate) It is so delicious and the shrimp meat is luscious.

Another view, check out the size of those prawns!

Salivation. Each plate comes with a small wedge of lemon...if you get it with the butter and garlic sauce. I always squeeze the lemon into the suace and dig right in.

Here is the one of the two sauces. You don't go there to eat healthy, that's for sure.

Now, if you plan to go to Romy's for lunch one day. Expect a wait. They have a sign warning you that the waiting time is a bit long, but it's worth it for the quality they provide. The freshness of the shrimp, the wonderfully simplistic flavors...nothing beats it. I usually try to head out way before lunchtime....to get there before the rush. Sorry I don't have the exact prices for you, but it's not cheap. I think I remember the Number 1 being about 11 dollars a plate and the Number 5 being about 16 dollars. When I find out, I will definitely update this. smile Another great thing about Romy's is that they also have a little sink on the side (with soap!) for you to wash your messy hands. If you don't get messy, you're not doing it right.

Now, I know there are a lot of people who love Giovanni's Shrimp Truck. I did try them once and I was not a fan. We tried the garlic and butter plate there and it was just not what we expected. It was incredibly salty and the shrimp quality was definitely not up to par to Romy's. If you ask me, the ride is only worth it if I can get a great plate at Romy's (I've never been disappointed)! And I have to say, the cashiers at Romy's are the sweetest ever! They even have a stamp card for you to take advantage of. It's 10 stamps and you get a free plate (this excludes Number 5), great deal right? So what are you waiting for? Get out there! smile

Oh my, I wish I did! If they ever released that out to me, I would probably make it myself all the time. Although the garlic and butter sauce recipe...I could probably get elsewhere. That's a good suggestion for a future recipe to try! smile

I love Romy's shrimp shack too, best food I have ever eaten! Do you have a recipe for the garlic and butter shrimp and/or the side house sauce with soy sauce?
