10/10/2007: "Yotteko-ya"

Next stop on the ramen journey, Yotteko-ya. This ramen shop is tucked away in a small corner of the McCully Shopping Center. They promise to offer authentic Kyoto style ramen and a broth that promises enjoyment and the ability to look younger. So how was the food?

Crooked picture of the store-front. Sorry!

Billboard of the menu and slogan right outside.

Cute origami table ornament.

Napkins.

Condiments.

Gyoza ($4.25 USD)

The skin is perfectly crispy...doesn't that look delicious?

Another angle, definitely home-made.

Kara-age ($7.45 USD)

Kara-age, dissected. The chicken was perfect; flavorful, juicy and not too crispy.

Tonshio Chashu Ramen - Oomori (Large sized portion of noodles) - ($7.95 + $1.00 USD)

I usually look for a spicy broth when dining on ramen. There is something about the regular broth that I don't quite enjoy, I tend to cover up many foods with spiciness...which really overpowers all other flavors. Since Yotteko does not have such a ramen, I decided to try the hawaiian salt based soup. Very good, not at all disappointed! I do notice they have added a Paitan Ramen, does anyone know what paitan is?

Yataiaji Ramen (Shoyu based) - ($6.45 USD)

Yotteko-ya also offers the choice of style for your noodles. You can either get it Japanese Style (traditional) or Local Style (softer). I went for the Japanese style while Kristian went for the local style. I can't speak for Kristian, but I enjoyed the traditional style very much. The staff is very nice...but once again, they are all Japanese. But I got great service, and the language barrier wasn't much of a problem. Out of all the ramen places on the island, I would rank this place number two (behind Goma Tei of course). Yotteko-Ya is probably the most authentic ramen shop that I've tried so far. There are quite a few in Waikiki I have yet to try, but seeing that I haven't heard of them...I'm not in a rush to find out. Any recommendations are definitely welcome!

I've been wondering what tsukemen-style was! Your comment pushed me to find out, and I'm curious to try it now! And I remember Taishoken having it...but I couldn't understand what it was...and was afraid to ask. Hahaha...but I will try it one day soon!
