08/24/2008: "Nijiya Market Now Open"
I go to work everyday in Manoa and have been greatly anticipating the opening of this new Japanese market located in Puck's Alley. Finally, this past Wednesday, they opened their doors! Nijiya Market is a California based Japanese market that decided to open a location in Hawaii...and boy am I glad they did! Enjoy some pictures...
Store front sign, they replaced Jelly's old location. Click here for more pictures!
Fresh produce
Refrigerated section, many noodles, konnyaku, tofu, etc.
Curry section...
Seafood section... Okay the next picture is a bit "cheeky," and not really food related. I just couldn't resist and thought it was hilarious! It might not be safe for kids, so just
click here if you are interested in seeing it. Heehee...
Now onto the best part, the prepared foods! Here is the sushi section, it also includes cold somen combos and even sandwiches!
Here is a small nigiri bento. The picture does not do the sushi justice, in person, the salmon looks so clean and fresh and the ahi is deep red. Great quality for a good price!
Spicy Tuna and Chirashi. I'm not used to eating avocado with spicy tuna, but it looks like a lot of places are jumping on that bandwagon. I did purchase the spicy tuna and must admit that the avocado did add a good flavor.
"Hot" foods case, look at the variety! The spam musubi looked delicious, I'm pretty sure they used fried rice for it. I put hot in quotations because it's actually in a refrigerated case. I got a hold of some bentos that were just placed in, so I was okay. They do have a microwave right by the case for you to use though.
Ground chicken bento, doesn't this look delicious? In case you didn't know, the yellow part is shredded eggs (I hope I'm right!)!
Tofu Bento, this bento looks delicious and healthy. This market is great, not only are the prices competitive...the quality of ingredients are great. Nijiya actually specializes in gourmet items and their own rice! All the prepared foods are prepared with organic rice and are priced great! On their website, I see that they have great ice creams as well! Unfortunately, we didn't see any in stock...but there was a freezer case waiting to be filled.

I will definitely be visiting this market as much as I can. They also offer a generous 1 hour parking validation so check it out!
